In a move away from fashion’s current love of Y2K design tropes comes a new wave of minimalist boots that focus on forward-thinking shapes and finishes, rather than seasonal trends. Maison Margiela’s iconic split-toe Tabi boot is a runway staple. Its popularity sky-rocketed this year when Cardi B shared shots of her wearing a white rendition with her 143 million Instagram followers.
In another modernized take on the ankle boot, Courrèges’ Nicolas Di Felice applies his fresh take on 1960s design to distinctive silhouettes in go-with-everything colorways. This has been a year of curveball footwear trends — see the Croc’s revival and the return of the UGG — and moon boots have emerged as fall’s cult star. The retro, ultra-padded skiwear staple gained popularity in the early 1970s with the emergence of après-ski and made its way off-piste in the 2000s thanks to Paris Hilton. This year, its reappearance was cemented by a host of celebrities and editors including Lily Collins, Madonna and ‘British Vogue’ editor Julia Hobbs.
