The season’s best knitwear styles

Share

WORDS BY ASHLEIGH GRIBBON

As fail-safe layering tools or wardrobe saviours against dipping temperatures, standout sweaters and knitwear are key in shaping a smart, seasonal wardrobe. ‘This fall’s offering of sweaters and knits is all about maximum impact: bold color, powerful proportions, and unmistakable logo-centric and graphic styles that are made to be seen,’ notes FARFETCH’s senior menswear editor, Luke Raymond. ‘What’s more, their hard-working nature strikes the natural balance of how we want to dress in the wake of the pandemic — fun and high-spirited pieces that are underpinned by the practicality we’ve grown accustomed to.’ To celebrate the return of sweater weather, we’re highlighting the key pieces to consider, as worn by Seoul-based model Cildu Kim.

Feel-good color

From acidic citrus hues to impactful teal, this season’s color story is defined by myriad feel-good shades that promise to brighten up an often muted fall closet. These high-octane finishes add interest to hard-working sweaters and give oversized knits a progressive feel — look to ERL, The Elder Statesman and Sacai for best-in-class investment styles. ‘For an event-ready yet effortless outfit, boldly colored knits will establish a look that can work for both an intimate dinner and a work party,’ notes Raymond. ‘It’s a mood mastered by Belgian designer Raf Simons as well as Andersson Bell and Jacquemus.’

High-impact graphics

2021 reveals a new take on the ubiquitous graphic knit as some of fashion’s heavy-hitters — including Prada, Versace and Saint Laurent — reenergize them through heady geometric prints. ‘Interesting, thoughtfully executed designs take a closet favorite to a modern new place for fall/winter 2021 via elevated graphics,’ says Raymond. ‘It’s a point of difference that the likes of Salvatore Ferragamo and Prada have mastered this season.’

Logo-centric styles

A perennial favorite, the designer logo sweater will work hard in your fall repertoire. Not only is it a surefire way to liven up your daily denim in a post-lockdown world, its statement finish and endless versatility also means it requires little in the way of styling. ‘JW Anderson revises his timeless logo-knit jumper in an oversized hooded design this season,’ says Raymond, ‘as Gucci’s Alessandro Michele applies his unmistakable quirk to prim-and-proper styles with a 1970s inflection.’

How to care for your sweaters

With an uncompromising approach to craftsmanship and the use of premium materials, sweaters and knitwear from the designers on FARFETCH are created to stand the test of time. But to truly make the most out of your new piece post-purchase, there are a few simple but important steps you can take to prolong their lifespan and keep them looking pristine.

  1. Always read the label carefully before washing any sweater. If the tag says ‘dry clean only’, don’t try to wash it at home, as the solvent used for dry cleaning is much gentler on clothes than at-home detergents.

  1. When it comes to maintaining the quality of your knitwear and to avoid shrinkage, hand-washing is the best mode of cleaning. Simply fill your basin with cool water, add a mild detergent and soak for at least 10 minutes before rinsing thoroughly.

  1. Never wring out your knitwear after washing, as it will distort the fabric. Instead, wrap woollens in a towel and gently squeeze, then lie flat on a clean towel to air dry.

  1. Don’t hang pieces made from cashmere and wool when drying, as this will leave your garment misshapen. Instead, perfect the art of the store-like fold to prevent stretching.

  1. Even high-quality cashmere and wool can be subject to some pilling, so keep a comb or electric depiller on hand to deal with bobbles.
