WORDS BY ALEXANDRA RHODES
It may be a new year, but in matters of life and style sometimes you have to look back to move forward. When pursuing that past-perfect look, it can be helpful for an expert to show you the ropes, and look at that - here’s self-proclaimed thrifting addict Courtney Halverson of Pretty Little Fawn, decked out in vintage Chanel and Fake Alpha Vintage from Farfetch’s very own archive selection, and sharing her insider knowledge...
Describe your style in 3 words
‘Easy, classic, vintage.’
Share some great vintage shopping tips...
‘Don't be afraid to look at things a little differently when shopping for vintage. If you're petite, shop in the kids section - you may find a hidden gem. The same goes for shopping in the men's section. There are more opportunities to find a treasure.’
Where are the best places to shop for Los Angeles vintage?
‘I absolutely love Virgo in Downtown LA, Shareen Vintage, and the Rose Bowl Flea Market. The Rose Bowl can be overwhelming with the sheer amount of vintage, but it's an absolute must-shop if you're willing to comb through tons of racks and jump into piles of denim.’
How do you care for your vintage clothes?
‘I only use natural soaps and products in my washing machine, and hand wash my more delicate pieces. The best thing is to not over wash. Be okay with small stains and signs of wear, because there's a chance those are just permanent in the fabric.’
Which vintage dealers should we follow on Instagram?
How do you ensure you get a good bargain?
‘I'm always looking at just how old the piece is, the quality of construction, and most importantly if it's something I can actually wear. If I know it'll be a staple, I'm willing to spend my money on it.’
What’s the best vintage piece you’ve ever scored?
‘I have a pair of vintage Gucci loafer heels that I absolutely love, and snapped up for $60. They don't quite fit, but I'm in the process of having them stretched or turned into mules. I'm determined to be able to wear them!’
