Take this shell pink coat, for example. Our new idée fixe is as pretty as a picture, but dig a little deeper and you’ll see that designer Hannah Wieland is really putting her History of Art degree to good use. In this piece she draws inspiration from French-American artist Louise Bourgeois’s linear life drawings, as well as – Wieland confesses – Bourgeois’s own enviable personal style.
Many of the Shrimps coats, which express Wieland’s love for eccentric pattern and colour, are also imbued by the witticisms of modern art. In fact much of the AW17 collection’s palette derives from the floral still lifes of Dutch painter Rachel Ruysch – with forest greens, pastel pinks and canary yellow at the fore.
